Instructions on how to upload your custom mood theme...

ETA: If you are linking to these instructions on your own mood theme post, please READ THIS.

Aug 2 2006: After all the comments I've been getting about this, I've decided to combine the two instructions posts into one. Now that LJ has created a new free Plus account type, there is no longer any need to manually add your images and moods into each entry. Since the Plus account type has all the features of a paid account, you can install your mood theme like you would with a paid account, and if you wish to revert back to a Basic account later, your mood theme will still be installed on your journal.

If you currently have a Basic (free) account, then just go here and switch to a Plus account. You can skip the page that asks for your information for advertisements, unless you want to keep your Plus account later. Then follow the instructions below to install your mood theme. Once it's installed, you can choose to keep the Plus account or go back to Basic. Again, if you go back to basic after installing your mood theme, your mood theme will still be on your LJ. If you ever want to change it, you can just go back to a Plus account and make your changes.

INSTRUCTIONS

If you can, I'd suggest using the admin console. While the custom mood editor is nice in theory, it is very temperamental, and freezes your browser while it registers every image. But, if you're very patient, that might work for you. Otherwise, try the admin console first. It's not nearly as complicated as it looks.

Using the Admin Console

1. Download the zip file for the mood theme you want, and unzip it in winzip or a similar program.

2. Then upload the 132 mood images to your domain, or an image hosting site like Photobucket. If you're using Photobucket, I suggest you download Flock, which allows you to upload images in batches. There are more instructions on it here. Do not change the file names.

3. Go to the LJ admin console.

4. Now, in the text box, paste in the following:

moodtheme_create "Title of Theme" "Short Description of Theme"

Of course, replace the "Title of Theme" and "Short Description of Theme" text with the title and description. They can be anything you want, as long as you remember the title, because you'll need it for later. Once you're done, click "execute". If you're successful, the console will give you a number. Copy down this number!

5. Now, back in the zip file, open the "adminconsolecodes.txt" file (if you're using someone else's theme, right-click on the file name there and download the .txt file on its own). Using the "replace" tool in your notepad program, replace the 12345 number with the number the console gave you previously. Also replace the "http://www.hosting.com/" url with the url to the folder that stores the images on your domain, or the photobucket album.

6. Now, paste in the edited codes into the admin console, and click execute. You should be directed to a page with your accepted codes. If not, go back and re-do the steps again.

7. Now go to your customize page. If you're using s2 (if you don't know what that means, then you probably are using s2), go to the "Customize Selected Theme" button on the bottom right of the page. There should be a "Mood Theme" section on your new page - underneath it, there is a drop down menu. Use the drop down to find your new theme. Save changes.

If you're using s1, simply scroll down your customize page until you find the "Mood Themes" section. Use the drop down to find your new theme. Save changes.

And you're done! Your theme should now be up on your LJ.

Using the Custom Mood Theme Editor

1. Download the zip file for the mood theme you want, and unzip it in winzip or a similar program.

2. Upload the 132 mood images to your domain, or an image hosting site like Photobucket. Do not change the file names.

3. Go here. Underneath "Create a New Theme", enter in the name of the mood theme you are about to upload. Click the create button.

4. Now you need to use the URLs of the mood images that you uploaded earlier. Enter in the appropriate URL for each mood section. Make sure that the height and width for each mood image is entered and correct, otherwise that mood will not be saved. When you're done, click on Save Changes at the bottom. And you're done!

5. Now go back to your Mood Theme Editor. Your new theme should be included on your list of mood themes. When you find it, look to the right of the mood icons and click on the "Use" button. Save changes, and your mood theme should be up on your LiveJournal.

Before you comment with any problems with your mood theme upload, please READ THIS TROUBLESHOOTING POST.

I'm afraid you can't use a custom mood theme on a free account.

Hi. I'm going to try to get your lovely Natalie mood theme working on my LJ sometime, but have a question (this stuff confuses me sometimes). Anyway, this part....

4. Now, in the text box, paste in the following:

moodtheme_create "Title of Theme" "Short Description of Theme"

Of course, replace the "Title of Theme" and "Short Description of Theme" text with the title and description. Then click "execute". If you're successful, the console will give you a number. Copy down this number!

I want to make sure I do this right so what exactly is the "title of theme" and "short description of theme" that I should replace there?

Appreciate the help. And sorry for a stupid question.

Well, if you're using the Natalie theme, then you'd probably want the title to be "Natalie Portman Theme", and the description could be "By Crackified". So your code would look like:

moodtheme_create "Natalie Portman Theme" "By Crackified"

It doesn't really matter what you use for them, just as long as its some kind of text, and that you remember what the title of the theme is so you'll be able to find it in your mood theme list later on.

Just wanted to let you know that it's a lovely mood theme and I just put it up in my journal! (With, of course, compliments to you in my user info.)

Ooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooh god, uploading each picture of the mood theme to photobucket takes forever, even when using the "multiple picture" thing. Is there any faster way? :Long sigh: Pleeeease say there's a faster way. I'm about to expload from frustration!(default

June 17 2005, 01:12:28 UTC 6 years ago

Er, no, I don't think there is. It shouldn't really take that long, considering the images are pretty small. You could do the whole batch at one time, if you change the number in the url for the multiple page, like this:

http://photobucket.com/albums/v250/comestoptherain/moodthemes/?multi=132&addtype=

Otherwise, there's no easier way.

I'm trying to install your Veronica Mars mood theme using the Custom Mood Theme Editor, and I'm not sure what to put in the 'height' and 'width' spaces. I measured them in Paint as being 1.25 x 0.69 inches and put those in each space, but the mood isn't showing up in my journal (I'm just seeing a '.' in each mood space now instead of an image). Is the measurement supposed to be in inches? Maybe that's what I did wrong. Do you have a standard size that you use, or do you know what size the images in the VM mood theme are? Thanks, I'd really appreciate it! :)

LiveJournal (like most online sites and programs that use images) measures in pixels. A pixel is a tiny dot, and I believe there's 72 pixels in an inch, if that helps at all. Your mood icons are showing as the "." because LJ thinks they're 1 pixel x 1 pixel as a default. You can right click on any image, and go to "Properties", and then beside "Dimensions" is the size of the image in pixels. The Veronica Mars General mood theme is 90 pixels in width, and 50 pixels in height. :)

It took me awhile but I finally loaded all the images to photobuckt and replaced all the necessary things in the notebook and put it on my livejournal. And I looked and a few of the mood icons were showing up. Then I noticed that only about 10-15% of them work. The rest say "undefined". Do you know why?

[info]euterpeslullaby

July 10 2005, 06:00:13 UTC 6 years ago

When I look at your journal now, I can't see any mood images, so I'm assuming you either took the theme off, or that's what you mean by the images being undefined. The only thing I can think of that would cause the images to say "undefined" would be if you only pasted in a portion of the adminconsolescode.txt file into the admin console. Try going through and trying all the steps again from scratch, and make sure that the urls you put in the txt file fit the ones that photobucket gives you on your album page. When you paste the codes into the admin console, make sure that all of them were copied and pastied in. If it still doesn't work, let me know.

I'm having problems with your artdungeon.net theme. I used the admin console and did everything you listed. Everything went through and I got to the page with accepted code and everything looked like it worked. I set the theme, but when I check my journal, nothing shows up. Likewise, nothing shows up on the update journal page when I change the mood.

If you have any ideas as to why it's not working, I'd love to hear them.

July 23 2005, 19:45:33 UTC 6 years ago

Well, it looks like it's definitely something to do with the image url, as when you go to the url it comes up with a 404 error. I can't see anything wrong with it, and the folder does seem to be correct with no typos, so it's likely something to do with the mood.jpg part of the url. Did you uncheck the "Keep original picture names" box by accident? Look at the URL under the image in your PB album and see if the end of the url is still mood.jpg, and not numbers instead. If it's still in the correct form, then if you can, make that folder public and then I can look into it more.

Hi! I'm not sure if you can help me, or if this is a different problem, but I downloaded your Ewan McGregor moodtheme with the admin console. Everything seemed to work, but when I open up my page all of the pictures show up as little boxes with red x's in them. Could you tell me what I did wrong?

[info]euterpeslullaby

July 27 2005, 05:02:20 UTC 6 years ago

The urls you're using look like this:

http://http://photobucket.com/albums/v439/junebug89/Mood%20Theme//mood.jpg

As you can see, the http:// is repeated twice. Go back to the adminconsolescode.txt file, and re-replace the urls again, but this time make sure to include the whole "http://www.hosting.com" instead of just "www.hosting.com", or you'll get two http://s again. Then go through the rest of the steps and enter in your codes into the admin console again. The urls should work now.

I love the mood icons. They inspired me to create my own Kyle Secor mood theme set. So, question. I have a friend or two who'd like to use them as well. How do I create a file that others can download?

Thanks in advance!

For starters, I love your Kristen Bell layout. I'm obsessed with Veronica Mars. Like, I HATE tv, but I saw an episode of the show once by accident, and have been completely hooked since. If I have to work when it's on, I have my boyfriend tape it. It's that serious.

Anyway, this page was in link on another journal. I was downloading a mood theme from http://www.livejournal.com/community/flb_icons/73960.html?view=620264#t620264 and they found your instructions quite useful in explaining how to set a mood theme up. I've had one before, so I know how to do this (or so I thought), but the mood theme I'm currently trying to use (see above link) does not include any sort of text file, so I'm at a loss as to how I'm supposed to install it to LiveJournal from my Photobucket account without a text file. Is there another way to do it without using the custom mood theme editor? I'm afraid I'll mess it up!

Try re-copying and pasting the codes into the admin console. It sounds like the codes got cut off, so only some of them were entered into the console. If that doesn't work, then I have no idea what the problem would be.
